Gay is the author of The New York Times best-selling essay collection Bad Feminist (), as well as the short story collection Ayiti (), the novel An Roxanne State (), the gray story collection Difficult Women (), and the memoir. Growing up in suburban Nebraska, Roxane Gay was a happy, straight-A student from a loving family.
